The Legend of LongTom
Adriaan Tomas van Tonder was born on the 30th of August 1880 in the small town of Bethal. His father, Jim van Tonder, was a well-known trader and teacher in the Bethal area.
During his early years it was already clear that Tomas, as his mother called him, would be a lot taller than his mates of the same age. Tomas was educated at his father’s farm school, but he was not really interested in all the fuss of learning. He was a young boy that was at ease in the veld, on his horse with his dog. You would’ve found him helping his father’s transporter Jan-Piet van der Walt moulding wagon wheels, fixing wooden yokes and cast iron hubs for wheels. It was clear that his hands could do anything, and soon he became known as just Tom.
The Boer War
Gold War
After the first Boer War gold was discovered in the Transvaal, and the Union recovered from bankruptcy in a very short period of time. Paul Kruger was doing well as President, making the British very uneasy. Fearing the situation, Cecil John Rhodes urges to go into the second Boer War with the Boers.
With the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899 LongTom joined the Boer Commandos.
Fighting with General Louis Botha and 7 000 men against 19 000 British soldiers of Lord Robberts, the Boers won the Battle of Bergendal, also known as the Battle of Belfast, in August 1900. LongTom was captured in November 1900 along with several other Boers, and sent to St. Helena Island. Here the Boers kept them busy with a game called rugby against the British, at one stage they even had to play for LongTom van Tonder’s life. (Film: Modder en Bloed).
